After fodder has mysteriously disappeared from the landlord’s stables, one suspects the work of an animal witch, a woman who knows how to take on the shape of an animal for camouflage. Indeed, one day Mathilda is caught red-handed stealing carrots. Since this has already stood before the witches’ court, the suspicion arises that they have found the culprit. In order to prove the suspicion, the witch is subjected to a series of severe tests. If she is the animal witch, it is written, then the transformation occurs when she is held and treated like the animal whose shape she knows how to take on. The woman is first trained as a bitch, then trained and trimmed as a mare – the witch endures both without the change occurring. But then she should be pushed as a rabbit with the big medieval ramming machine!
